Vietnam combat veteran sought

By Jeffry Boatright

The search has been launched for the 2017 Grand Marshal of the Suwannee Regional Veterans Parade in Suwannee County. Although Nov. 11 is still four months away, the process of selecting a Grand Marshall is a lengthy endeavor, according to Suwannee County Veteran Service Officer Ellis Gray. A selection committee has been organized and will select the Grand Marshal from a pool of eligible candidates.

An early phase of the process is already underway with Gray seeking Vietnam Combat Veterans from Suwannee County, who are willing to be considered for the honor. He asks that candidates submit a photo and brief article or biography of themselves and their service to our country to his office.

Along with the Grand Marshal and Honorary Marshals, Gray hopes to see many Vietnam Veterans from all branches of military participate in the parade, ceremony and meal. The parade will begin at 9 a.m., November 11. Following the parade, the annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the city cemetery. A meal will be provided for all veterans at the Elks Lodge in Live Oak immediately following the ceremony.

Parade applications are now available at the Suwannee County Veterans Services Office, which is located at 224 Pine Ave., in Live Oak. Gray noted, however, that animals are no longer allowed in the parade. Interested participants can also contact Gray at (386) 364-3403
